Hell yeah! Brooklyn trio Shop Talk have just dropped a new single and, like its predecessors, it is ex-ce-llent, especially if you like your punk with a carbon date of late ’70s. The title track twists NYC’s Museum of Sex into a disorienting headspace where trying to understand sexuality’s history gets tangled up in faulty memories and bad intentions. It’s heady stuff for a punk song, but sonically it harkens straight back to a mix of old school L.A. punk rock and a wilder version of The Undertones—all snarling guitars and raw energy that feels ripped from a late ’70s punk flyer. On the flip, Gaslight has more of a Buzzcocks/Undertones pop feel to it, packed with the kind of jittery hooks that made British pop punk so damn addictive.
Shop Talk plays a style that few bands attempt nowadays, perhaps because it’s so difficult to pull off without sounding like a nostalgia act or a tribute band. Shop Talk, now with Angie Boylan (Sleater-Kinney, Marissa Paternoster Band) on drums, make it look easy—and more importantly, make it sound vital.
