New album: The Science of Words || The Science of Words

A sugar rush of guitars, melodies, and overdue brilliance

It’s jangle Tuesday on Add To Wantlist! Next to the excellent new Radio Field and Former Champ debut album, here’s another gem: the self-titled debut LP from the Stoke-on-Trent foursome The Science of Words*. They’ve been playing together for over a decade, but only now deliver their first full-length, out on LP via Old Bad Habits Label (CD on Next Phase: Normal Records).

These ten tracks are a sugar-rushed blast for anyone into underground guitar pop. The label’s RIYL list (Rosehips, The Shop Assistants, The Fat Tulips, Fizzbombs, Talulah Gosh, Tiger Trap, The Primitives) is dead-on: this is fuzzy yet sweet, twee but with bite, melancholic and charming in equal measure. Most importantly, these songs are ridiculously catchy, with hooks that feel like they could sneak onto mainstream radio without losing an ounce of DIY charm.

The Science of Words: overdue, irresistible, and very worth the wait!

* The Science of Words is Corinne Plant (Jack In The Green) on lead guitar and vocals, Ian Evans (Horowitz, Red Fox Labrador) on bass, Dave Morgan-Williams (Basement, The Loveless) on guitar, and Pete Bowers (Rosehips, Jack In The Green, Horowitz, The Total Rejection) on guitar as well.
