The first (and last) time we wrote about Aberdeen’s The Terminal Buildings was back in 2023. This August, the solo project returns with two new albums, both shaped by the upheaval of moving from Glasgow back to Aberdeen.

Today brings the first of the pair: A Binful of Bells. Here, Finlay (the artist behind The Terminal Buildings) leans into the softer side of ‘60s psych—think The Byrds or The Zombies—yielding lo-fi pop gems that feel out of time and place. It’s a record that flows beautifully front to back, even with its unconventional shape.

Of the 19 songs here, about eight are instrumentals that slip in like pauses or warped muzak, giving the album an experimental tilt. That’s balanced by timeless melodies and gently off-kilter pop that keep you hooked in The Terminal Buildings’ odd little universe. It’s a space not too far from where Pete Gill (WPTR, 2nd Grade) and Matt Addison (Mythical Motors) also roam—artists mining everyday magic through scrappy, sparkling songcraft.

A Binful of Bells is concise yet expansive, inviting close listening and rewarding it with moments of quiet wonder.
