Here’s a Bandcamp Friday gem we were to impatient to save for Dusted (our favorite covers of the month feature): Mod Mayday 23 by Sharp Pins, the solo project of Kai Slater (of Lifeguard fame). Slater is quickly rising in the indie underground, and if you haven’t yet, be sure to dive into the two full-length albums he’s dropped over the past 18 months—check out our review of his debut here.

On this album, Slater took more than a little inspiration from Mods Mayday 79, a classic collection comprised of highlights from a show in London in 1979 featuring second wave mod bands like Secret Affair, Beggar, the Mods, and Squire. Slater reimagines tracks from these bands, giving them a lo-fi, garage power pop makeover that sounds like basement outtakes from The Nerves. The result? Crazy fun, insanely catchy, and packed with garage rock energy—a hit fest that’s hard to resist. Tape available through Hallogallo.
