New album: Power Pants || PP5

Ben Salmon recently wrote a pretty cool feature on the rise of the egg punk movement. While the piece offers an explanatory introduction to the genre, and shares many of the bands and artists involved – including ATW favorites like Gee Tee, Cherry Cheeks, Snõõper, Erik Nervous and Ishka Edmeades, Power Pants (Winchester, Virginia) were notably absent. Their new record PP5 is a prototypical egg punk record that undeniably offers the most accessible gateway if you are curious what the fuss is all about.

Power Pants write quirky songs with bubblegummy rhymes and synth licks that have the earworm stickiness of children’s songs or old school arcade games. At its core though, this is garagey pop punk with its roots in the songbooks of Jay Reatard and Ramones. It’s extremely contagious, extremely fun, and even when you are not a dancer it’s impossible to sit still while experiencing this collection of songs.

PP5 is out now through Punk Valley Records. And yes, the number 5 in the title refers to the fifth (mini)album released in a barely eleven month-period (!). I guess it’s superfluous to call this my favorite egg punk record of the year so far, it being January 8th. But honestly, if this record is not among my top 5 egg punk records of 2024, I’d be one amazed and excited music blogger and fan.
