On Call is the fourth Colt Wave album in three years by the long-distance bromance between Colby Mancasola and Ken Lovgren. It’s quite the discography already, and the four albums (two of which made the wantlist) accumulate to about 80 minutes of perfect background music to a bustling day at the office.
Staying true to their signature style, On Call contains two minute indie rock songs that are characterized by their subtlety, a touch of jangliness, and a knack for constantly tugging at your auditory senses. And, just as with their earlier releases, Colt Wave’s charm isn’t something that reveals itself readily upon the initial listen. In fact, don’t be taken aback if you find yourself underwhelmed at first, echoing the sentiment voiced in one of their songs, “It’s just a surface wound.” Colt Wave will not cut deep initially, and yet, upon repeated exploration, you’ll find their discography to be a chain of deep cuts. Mancasola and Ken Lovgren have created a sustainable recipe, one you keep returning to.
