bugcatcher is a recording project by Jake Denning (Rochester, NY) and friends. John Carlo Pecheone, Benjamin Combs, Duvante Cora, and Alyssa Zaso round out his live band and have also contributed to the creation of Go!, which is bugcatcher’s second full length. The record follows 2022’s Slacker.
What first got me into Go! was the song Contact, a song that reminds me of everything I love about the first couple of Pedro The Lion records. Go! is just eight songs, but it feels packed in its relative brief duration of twenty minutes. There are emo tendencies and slacker elements to the indie rock sound of bugcatcher – alt country says hello as well. But whatever you’d call it, it sure is nice to float along to the crunchy guitar tones and the lo-fi-ish production really suits the songwriting of Jake Denning well.
Go! is an engaging record that I come to appreciate more with each play. Recommended listening!
