The sparrowhawk is not the largest raptor, but they look great and are effective predators, often relying on the element of surprise. If you wonder what happened to all the nice birds that used to visit your bird-feeding station, it’s a safe bet a sparrowhawk has been creating havoc. So yeah, Sparrowhawk is a solid pick for a band name.
Formed in Minneapolis in 2018, Sparrowhawk is a four-piece that definitely caught me by surprise. I received a mail from “Phil Lynott” – way to stand out among the hundreds of weekly e-mails guys! The mail explained how the band came together out of a shared love for bands like Thin Lizzy, The Dictators (Sparrowhawk cover Stay With Me), and The Sweet, as well as more contemporary bands like Sheer Mag and White Reaper. Are you excited yet? Then I read that Sparrowhawk has members of two bands I love: Mystery Date and Private Interests, two bands I wholeheartedly recommend checking out if you haven’t already. You won’t regret it!
Back to Sparrowhawk, who debut with a twelve track self-titled album that they recorded in just two days. The record has that loose yet focused (or manic?) feel of a band playing live full of adrenaline to unleash their creations on unexpecting listeners worldwide. All the before mentioned influences apply, and their love for this style of music shines through. Sparrowhawk is all heart, all passion and their blend of huge guitar riffs, anthemic singing is infectious. This is rock’n’roll worship from the garage by a band attacking at full force and it’s a thing of beauty. Play loud!
