Jagger Holly is taking boldness to a whole new level with their new LP Rivoltella. 29 songs? Really?! That is insane for a pop punk record, especially given that these are no 30-second songs – the majority of do not stray far from the 2-minute mark. To fit all the songs, Monster Zero and Hey Pizza! Records had to press it on a double LP. More bold moves by Jagger Holly: The album art which is a nod to what may be The Beatles’ most critically acclaimed record. Or what about calling the second song of your magnus opus Don’t Bore Us (Get To The Chorus)? Way to set the bar high for yourselves, Jagger Holly!
And yet, 27 songs later I am far from bored and still enjoying myself. Perhaps it’s because the upbeat pop punk of Rivoltella is such a great seasonal fit – it’s pleasantly sunny with a cool breeze while I’m listening to the record. More likely, it’s the quality of the tunes. Jagger Holly truly outdid themselves on this one, finding the sweet spot between pop, punk (rock) and bubblegum on the most of these songs. Never does the record becomes to sweet or sappy or samey. If anything, Jagger Holly prove that it’s possible to create a 29 song pop punk record that remains certified fresh and fun front-to-back. It is a gutsy move by the band who generously share a wealth of hooks and memorable melodies with us listeners.
Decades from now we’ll be shaking our heads reminiscing about that time that Jagger Holly released a 29 song record, only to quickly grin and exlaim: “That was pretty awesome.”
