Mega X may sound like a name for a console or computer game, but is in fact an indiepunk band based in Tokyo. The four members count Weezer, The Muffs, Sheer Mag, Wavves, Mates Of State, Best Coast and Superchunk among their many influences. Mega X open their new full length New Mythtakes strongly with Find Your Toy and Deadhead. Both songs are reminiscent more of UK indie punks Martha than the bands mentioned above, though in the bridge of the album opener Mega X go full Mates Of State. Other highlights include Sweet8beat and What I Do (a song reminding me more than a little of Discount).
There is a ramshackle looseness to the songs on New Mythtakes which fits this style of music perfectly. The youthful energy and interplay between the male and female vocals further adds to the appeal of Mega X.
