In the late ’90s and early ’00s, Ann Beretta released a handful of records on labels like Fueled By Ramen and Lookout!. I listened to a lot of punkrock back then, but Ann Beretta for some reason never clicked with me. By coincidence, I noticed that the band had a new record out and pressed play. And lo and behold, that new record (Rise) is the first Ann Beretta record I played front to back. Perhaps I was in a state of melancholia? In the mood for some old school mid-paced poppy punkrock? Or more likely: Ann Beretta sound anthemic and inspired on Rise, a record full of well executed instantly likeable punkrock tunes that may sound familiar but definitely not tiresome or chewed out.
Coincidentally or not, two of the best tracks on the record have guest appearances from contemporaries (Less Than Jake’s Chris DeMakes and Strike Anywhere’s Thomas Barnett). Gimme Some Action and Get Up, Let’s Go are standouts as well.
Rise is the first full length with new material from Ann Beretta since 2003’s Three Chord Revolution. It is produced by Mass Giorgini. It’s a 100% self-release and a labour of love. Another reason to give Ann Beretta a chance.
