And now for something completely different, we head to the south of the Netherlands, where Terry Dark—he carries a past in metal band Jameson Raid—spent six years traveling through the space-time continuum to create the story of Caravel. Escapism? Probably. From its Lift Off you enter a surrealistic and futuristic world: “Spit me out of this time warp. Shoot me up into space. Maybe I’ll learn to breathe in another place.”
The singer-songwriter divides the journey into thirteen parts, ranging from proggy rock songs and dreamy ballads to instrumentals, spoken word, and even adverts. It’s a strange yet enchanting listening trip (expect characteristic vocals over hypnotic soundscapes), where a wormhole suddenly feels like home—you have to experience it to believe it. But as closing track We are Not Alone reassures: “There’s really nothing to explain.”
Caravel—written, sung and recorded by Terry Dark—is out digitally, on CD and vinyl LP (self-released). Created with the help of a selection of musicians from the Netherlands and Germany.
