Sweatpants Party’s latest album Wee Little Songs lives up to its name. These aren’t kids’ tunes, but they are brief – we’re talking 12 tracks in just 8.5 minutes. It’s so compact, you could probably squeeze it onto a 7″ single, but Monster Zero Records has given it the full LP treatment.

Pop punk mastermind Kevin Aper, along with a crew including Andy (7 Years Bad Luck), Jay Dee (Jagger Holly), Frizzante (Stockkampf) and a “whole bunch of random amigos” has crafted a whirlwind of snotty pop-punk goodness. The record reminds me of Fat Wreck’s late ’90s Short Music For Short People compilation, where 101 bands each contributed a 30-second track. Not just for its brevity and because more than a couple of songs echo Fat Mike’s songwriting, but also because Sweatpants Party escapes monotony by showcasing a variety of styles and tempos here.

Whether by design or happy accident, the time constraint forces Aper to make every second count, resulting in a dizzying array of memorable hooks. Coupled with witty lyrics – including a nod to former bandmate Marien Nicotine (The Windowsill, Giant Eagles, The Shivvies) – Wee Little Songs delivers 8.5 minutes of guaranteed grins and head-nods.
