Let’s Whisper started as a home-recording project between Colin Clary and Dana Kaplan (both of The Smittens, both do guitar, vocals and keys), with the band name referring to their songwriting process (“whispering”). Drummer Brad Searles (Eef, The Also-Rans) joined them. Eleven years after the debut full-length The Shortest Days, the band has expanded with bassist/guitarist Jeff Baron (Essex Green, Ladybug Transistor) and bassist/vocalist Emma Kupa (Standard Fare, Mammoth Penguins, The Hayman Kupa Band), and they have arrived at The In-Between Times on their sophomore album – “a record about love and loss and change and possibilities”, according to the musicians. It’s a very pleasant indie pop album with wonderful boy-girl vocal interaction, mood-setting jangling guitars, witty poetic lyrics and catchy harmonies (“I’m gonna be a dad who sings la la la la la la – from Sing!), and they even manage to make you feel like tunes were written just for you (“You’re the only one who knows all of our songs” – from Hey You, I Know You). I wonder what they’ll whisper about next, but for now we’ll have a good time with these 13 new tracks.
