You might get the impression that most cool rock kids are currently focusing on angry post-punk, but luckily there are exceptions who don’t care. Imaginary Friend is the unpretentious solo project of sympathetic singer-songwriter Max from Mainz, Germany. He plays summery slacker pop, obviously inspired by the likes of Mac DeMarco, Boy Pablo and Jack Johnson (Would the band name refer to them? That the question “What would Mac do?” is simply answered in the back of his mind?). On his laid-back debut EP Twentysomething you hear six nice jangly guitar songs about the everyday worries of millennials who feel they are running in the wrong direction, tunes to whistle to like everything’s OK: “Look at all them birdies // Singin’ in the sky // Some of them in low keys // Some of them so high.” Such an Imaginary Friend is exactly what we need right now.
