2023 is here. Ready to get excited about new music again? Let me introduce you to a new and excellent 9-song (mini)album by Tulsa twangy punkrock band Hummin’ Bird. The band sneakily released the record on the final day of 2022, essentially admitting that they either have low selfesteem or not care about your AOTY lists. That is a shame, because Underneath Scum Light is a hell of a record. In fact, it’s one of the more exciting punk rock records I’ve heard in quite some time.
Hummin’ Bird don’t seem to take themselves all to seriously – just watch the video below (updated January 17th with a new YouTube video featuring a short movie featuring three of their songs), but they play their songs with full conviction. Hummin’ Bird are clearly a bunch of skilled musicians, and that shines through, even though Underneath Scum Light has the sound, the spontaneity and attitude of a punk rock record. The nine songs are well built and breath some fresh oxygen in a familiar sound. Hummin’ Bird do not do punk-by-numbers or at least it doesn’t sound that way. What they do do? Provide a very promising start of 2023. Out now on LP!
