When a band calls their 9th (!) album All Fired Up, all you can hope for is that it’s not meant in jest or as an ironic comment. Rest assured, Skimmer (Birmingham, UK) sound inspired and energetic on their latest record. Their classic pop punk sound is right on the money. Skimmer find just the right balance between energy, melody, attitude and snottiness on their new record. Listening to the record, it should come as no surprise that it’s co-released by three labels trying to keep the Lookout! Records spirit alive: Council Pop (UK), Bloated Kat (US), and Waterslide Records (JP).
For those unfamiliar with the band, Skimmer have been around since 1993, toured extensively (including 10 headlining tours in Japan), and were the last band to record a session with John Peel before his passing. Those are all interesting and impressive facts, but you’re only as good as the last great thing you did. And All Fired Up sound more than alright by me.
