What a great opening line it is: “Looking like a shop window \/\/ The mannequin lies.” The first single (about the fact that we only display what we want to show to others), which gave the band its name, is the appropriate opening salvo from The State Of Being Human<\/em><\/a>, the full-lenght debut album from UK four-piece Shop Window. Since we’ve already heard several singles, it’s no surprise that this record is as good as it is (it was not the intention at first, but luckily even Sad Eyes<\/em><\/a> – one of the most beautiful tracks of last year – ended up on the record). Actually this is a succession of original highlights. Composer Carl Mann (vocals \/ guitars), Simon ‘Syd’ Oxlee (keyboards \/ vocals), Martin Corder (bass \/ vocals), and Phil Elphee (drums) play first class jangly guitar pop songs with influences from 80’s Creation Records bands and 90’s indie pop, with nods to power pop and alternative rock. That makes for a familiar sound, but the appealing lyrics, captivating melodies, vocal harmonies and good teamwork lift these songs far above the average. The Shop Window seduces, but also delivers when you open the door.<\/p>\n
