I lost count of the times I’ve seen Boysetsfire live, but I can’t recall a bad show by the band. I consider myself a fan, and a lot of that has to do with Nathan Gray, who beyond a remarkable vocal talent also was a fearless and charismatic preacher in a time where preaching at shows became increasingly rare. Given Gray’s outspoken and inspirational nature, I was surprised (and heartened) to read that at age 50, after years of depression, drug and alcohol abuse while fretting over their sexual identity, Gray came out as queer and nonbinary<\/a>. Consider The Iron Roses to be a celebratory project of that pivotal decision.<\/p>\n

The Iron Roses are a six-piece that, on their self-titled debut, play a brand of punk rock that is joyful, catchy as hell and as inclusive as its cast of band members – don’t be surprised to find some ska, rap, reggea and hardcore between all the rockin’ out. With the joyful nature of these anthems, you’d almost forget that a lot of the lyrics are about pretty serious stuff. Let’s say that The Iron Roses definitely want to change society, but they prefer to have you dancing to their revolution. Front and center in the mix is the distinct voice of Gray, who has lost nothing of their power, in perfect synergy with Becky Fontaine. All in all, I’m having a blast spinning this record.<\/p>\n
