Not all new music is really new, as many artists cover songs. Sometimes these are songs by their favorite artists, eg as a tribute to such a musical hero for a special reason, or they simply feel that a song deserves to be dusted and polished to reacquaint fans with great songs from the past. Other times, bands cover songs as a parody. Regardless of intent, some of those cover versions are so good or so much fun, we\u2019d like to put a spotlight on them. Chosen from a wide range, here are \u2013 in random order \u2013 ten of our favorite covers from last month \u2013 links to the pages where you can add them to your wantlist included.<\/em><\/p>\n

In June we stumbled upon new cover releases from Son Volt<\/a> (Day Of The Doug: The Songs Of Doug Sahm<\/em>), Sparkle*Jets U.K.<\/a> (Best Of Friends<\/em>), Vista Blue<\/a> (Runaway<\/em>), Billy Cobb<\/a> (I Stole Every Song<\/em>), Austin Lucas<\/a> (Reinventing Against Me!<\/em>), Pantzig<\/a> (Can I Borrow Some Talent<\/em>), John Dowler’s Vanity Project<\/a> (Jukebox Amnesia<\/em>), Classic Pat<\/a> (Why Not? Vol. One<\/em>), The BellRays<\/a> (Ball Of Confusion<\/em>),\u00a0Skeewiff<\/a> (Exclusive Blend<\/em> \/ Spanish Flea<\/em>), Amanda Shires & Bobbie Nelson<\/a> (Loving You<\/em>), contemporary country & folk artists<\/a> (Prairie Biscuits<\/em>) and various Milwaukee musicians<\/a> (Cherryland’s movie soundtrack compilation Covered In Celluloid<\/em>), and quite a few individual songs, but we would like to push the following tunes to the forefront.<\/p>\n

You’re the One That I Want<\/a> || Cover: Bonzos || Original: John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John<\/strong>
\nSpanish punk band Bonzos<\/a> returned with a 7″ single on Family Spree Recordings, converting the 1978 hit from the Grease<\/em><\/a> soundtrack into a punk rock version for the A side. It doesn’t take much imagination to understand that this works out very well. Party time! The flipside and artwork are pretty cool too.<\/p>\n
