New album: Women Of the Night || Sub Rosa

New York City cool is back. Please meet the Women of the Night, three guys with the right looks, hairstyles and sunglasses. Singer / songwriter / guitarist Jordan D’Arsie, drummer Kyubae Lee and bassist / slide guitarist Gray Watson play a headstrong mix of proto-punk, new wave, psych, glam and garage rock. The interesting thing is that you’ll hear all kinds of well-known influences on their debut album Sub Rosa, but it isn’t possible to name them exactly; it resembles bands like New York Dolls, The Strokes, Television, Velvet Underground and Modern Lovers, but it’s different and elusive. These are three guys with their own sound, riffs and vocals. This is cool, this is good, this could get big. Listen to songs like The Stranger and Dark Horsey and it won’t take much effort to imagine that these are going to be hits. Sub Rosa is out now digitally and on vinyl LP through Declared Goods (USA) and Heavy Soul Records (UK).

New album: Boy Golden || Church of Better Daze

After a great uplifting single, Boy Golden now releases his debut album Church of Better Daze, which as a whole is just as enjoyable. The Canadian songwriter / musician / audio engineer called Liam Duncan in real life only wants one thing – enjoy each day and make good music – and thanks to collaboration, common goals and lots of cannabis, he succeeds very well with this character and concept. It’s a quirky, intriguing and cool record, with positive lyrics and summery, mellow melodies. Musically it’s a potpourri of indie, garage rock, alt-country, glam and gospel – varied, experimental and versatile (you keep hearing new Easter eggs) – but miraculously it works out well. Church of Better Daze is out now digitally, on CD, cassette and vinyl LP, through Six Shooter Records. For fans of JJ Cale, Dope Lemon, Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard. Stream the full album below.

New EP: Bakemono Stereo || EP I

Those who’ve listened to Big City’s Stone Angels on the fifteen-minute drive to wherever, and are looking for something for the way back, can turn up the volume a little more for Bakemono Stereo’s first EP. All we know about the band is that they are Arnaud (guitar/bass), Hugo (vocals) and Jasper (drums), but their sound speaks for itself. The Berlin based rock ‘n’ roll trio play fast punk rock with a touch of glam that will leave you exhausted. Stream the songs below.

New EP: Big City || Stone Angels

New York five-piece Big City throws power pop and glam rock into the blender and then tops the mixture with a sauce of soul. Their new (digital) EP Stone Angels has five strong tracks, which make the fifteen minute ride to the mall more than bearable. The lyrics serve the music (“Pulled up in Chevy, and you said // Oh so heavy”), but the music is mighty fine, not least thanks to the horn arrangements. Stream the songs below.

New single: Bad Sex || Bad Sex (Miranda b/w Devil Doll)

Okay, I am going to keep this short, before I give in to any of the other bad puns the name of this band evokes. I am talking about Bad Sex, who are a raunchy and sleazy powerpop’n’roll outfit from Portland. With their latest single, the band sends a well-aimed arrow to anyone who gets excited by The Sweet, The Cry, The Exploding Hearts and Gentleman Jesse. Bad Sex hits that sweet spot between powerpop, punk, glam and rock-‘n’-roll on both of these songs, and I hope to hear more from them soon. Out now on a 7″ at Crash Assailant Records. Talk to you later, going to clean up my browser history now.

New album: The Foshays || Not So Now

And now for something completely different…meet The Foshays, a cartoon rock band from Minneapolis. The mastermind behind this project is illustrator BiL Sherman, who writes the songs and draws the cartoons. Together with the members of his band Mannequins on Welfare, he recorded the songs that make up The Foshays debut album Not So Now. There are 13 songs on the record. Four of these songs were also on the bands 2019 Foshays First EP 7″, which, in perfect harmony with the cartoon band image, also contained a 12 page comic book.

To be clear, although The Foshays are a cartoon band, these songs are all originals of self-proclaimed bubblegum hardrock. I think that is a solid description of the music, although I would add glam, soul, garage and rock-‘n’-roll as well. Like the best comic books, the records starts and finishes strongly: the album opener and the album closer are my favorite songs. But the middle part is not too shabby neither. Keep in touch with the adventures of The Foshays on Twitter.

New album: Jimmy Vapid || Killmatic

Jim Reed aka Jimmy Vapid recently played drums on Full Moon Fever, a record by fellow Ontarian and Vapids bandmate Matt Ellis I very much enjoy. This month, Jimmy released a new solo album ominously titled Killmatic that is also worth diving into. It has 14 punk rock anthems that are infused with sleazy rock-‘n’-roll influences. Fast and catchy, straightforward and tight, Killmatic is a record that doesn’t let up, and offers plenty of tempo changes, hooks and variations to draw you in and satisfy your short attention span.

New album: Leopardo || Malcantone

If you have some time to spare for a record that upon multiple listens will ultimately grow on you and get under your skin, would you be interested in such delayed rewards? I am talking about Malcantone from Leopardo, which is a delightfully weird yet strangely accessible record. It’s the kind of record I did not expect to write about, but somehow I keep returning to. It’s also the kind of record I lack the vocabulary for to explain in full. Leopardo are from Schwitzerland, but they may just as well reside in the Chelsea Hotel (NYC) in the seventies. Comparing Leopardo to Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground is kinda lazy, but it also kinda makes sense. Malcantone is an eclectic mix of styles, including folk (Malcantone, Bitter Man), psych (Country Side Love, Hardship), punk (Tell Me, I Belong To You), garage (Put Me In Jail), and rock-‘n’- roll (Throwback in The Snow). I was quick to dismiss this record and I was wrong.

New EP: Teenage X || The Point Of Everything

If I had to do an one word review of the new self-titled EP by Canadian powerpop band Teenage X it would be HOOKS! Or HITS! Teenage X create the kind of massively catchy and well produced punk infused powerpop songs that would have been radio hits in a different era. It’s a glorious return by the Toronto band who’s been together for almost 14 years, but hasn’t released new music since 2013. In fact, according to the band’s Facebook page, they started recording this EP in 2019 and finished it right at the start of the pandemic. Anyhow, The Point Of Everything was worth the wait. Let’s hope, it’s a sign of more to come.

New album: Horseloverfat || Greetings From Nowhere

Horseloverfat is an unusual name. That also applies to their music, which is all over the place and kinda awesome. The band from Italy self-desribes as “a psichedelic (sic) krautrock group, a transnational and stateless parody that encompasses all without regards to purism and coherence.” On their new record Greetings From Nowhere, Horseloverfat goes from postpunk to psychedelic to protopunk to country to kraut to glam in their songs. Somehow, the band manages to pull it off without creating a unlistenable mess. They recorded Greetings From Nowhere in March in an old school fashion: as a live band, and with limited digital intereference. The result is a time portal to the music of the ’60s, ’70s and early ’80s. Step in, if you’d like!
