The last Psychic Flowers record came out five years ago. A lot accumulates in five years, and the new recordsounds like proof of exactly that.

Columbarium Niches plays like two records shuffled together, and both are worth your time. One is loud and extroverted, built on dirty guitar riffs that strut around like they own the place (RIYL The Mystery Lights). The other is more subdued and wide-ranging, a lo-fi power pop record built on a psychedelic foundation, with Superchunk’s sprawling compilations somewhere in its DNA. That these two coexist without ever feeling confused or unfocused is a small miracle, and a testament to how locked in David Settle (2nd Grade, The Fragiles), Ronnie Francisco (Protocol, Piston), and Zak Krone (Bruise Bath) sound throughout.

Gems hiding on both sides.

Columbarium Niches is out now on Tape and CD via Living Lost Records.
