We’ve been keeping a close eye on Monster Wave for a few years now, reason enough to be excited about the latest release from the North Carolina surf rock quartet. The Rise of Monster Wave compiles fifteen of their horror-themed instrumentals, previously featured on recent EPs, the 2023 Pazuzu Luau LP, and their 2022 debut EP Beyond The Reef. The album concludes with the only newish tune, a cover of Hawaii Samurai’s Ali Baba.
The sound is drenched in twang and tremolo; however (as noted at the time on Curse of Monster Wave), the real charm lies in the storytelling. Without uttering a word, these tracks unfold like little scary movies, complete with unexpected twists and narrow escapes. This is surf music born of a colossal imagination, thrilling and danceable.
The Rise of Monster Wave is out digitally (self-released). Featuring Casey Willis (guitar, bass), Joel Shuman (bass, guitar), Ryan Grisso (keyboard, guitar), and Lee Rubenstein (drums).
