The rock ‘n’ roll-soaked world of Fruited Planes (Portland, Oregon) seems to exist somewhere between a smoggy sunset and a sweaty night at the local juke joint. “No one’s going home with one eye tonight,” we hear in the forceful opening track Super Powers, and then it really can’t go wrong anymore.
On their new record, Dismal Nitch, these underground veterans (Seth Bender, Scott Derr, Michael Henrickson, Jason Willmon) stir together everything they have gained in influences and experience over the decades. The vocals add a wonderfully oddball touch, but the guitars take the spotlight, kicking out riffs with a life-or-death sense of purpose. This is music for a world gone sideways, with nobody asking permission to turn the amp up.
Dismal Nitch—recorded by Mike Vasquez—is out digitally and on vinyl LP through Dot Dash Sounds. Featuring Seth Bender (guitar), Scott Derr (guitar), Jason Willmon (bass), and Michael Henrickson (drums), with Mike Vasquez (trumpet) and Paul Haines (sax) on select tracks.
