France may not have won the World Cup, but it is growing cool new bands like mushrooms. Yesterday we shared the fantastic debut EP by Corde Sortie. Today it’s Lyon’s turn, with Rupture delivering a debut 7″ that is absolutely worth your time and money.

On Eponyme, the quartet introduces itself with four blasts of classic French punk rock, fueled by garage swagger and a healthy dose of conviction. Rupture is just as invested in societal politics as personal ones, and while the songs are sung in French, they’re well worth feeding through a translator. Guillotière paints a gritty portrait of life in Lyon’s most notorious neighborhood, where solidarity and diversity collide with poverty, police harassment, and the daily struggle to get by. Guerre Identitaire, meanwhile, is a fierce anti-fascist anthem taking aim at xenophobia and creeping authoritarianism.

Thankfully, the music hits just as hard as the message. Sharp riffs, shout-along choruses, and enough urgency to make you want to learn French just to sing along.
