New album: Odd Marshall || Seconds

Big guitars, bigger feelings

On his second long-player Seconds, Toronto, Ontario-based singer/songwriter/guitarist Odd Marshall naturally blends introspective singer-songwriter confessional with dusty Americana, gritty grunge spirit, and tough barroom rock. It’s a distinct sonic identity that is intriguing. The eight new songs were recorded in Joshua Tree with Blind Melon guitarists Christopher Thorn and Rogers Stevens, who turned their interplay into lively conversations rather than straightforward arrangements. Sincerity and laid-back grooves drift into rougher, swaggering moments and back again, all framed by fascinating storytelling and a full-bodied production.

At its core, the album feels like a reckoning with the past: youthful rebellion colliding with adult self-awareness, but also chasing the hope that somewhere ahead there’s a version of life that finally fits. Characters run from guilt, drift through fleeting romances, look back on failed relationships, and dream about escape, whether that’s through love, the road, or rock ‘n’ roll itself: “Let me // Write my // Name on the face of today” (from Wreck Your Life (For Rock ‘n’ Roll)). Mission accomplished.

Seconds, produced and mixed by Christopher Thorn, is out now digitally (self-released). Featuring Odd Marshall (acoustic guitar), Jon Ossman (bass), Rogers Stevens (electric guitar), Christopher Thorn (electric guitar, piano, organs), Rami Jaffee (piano, organs), Mathias Schneeberger (clavinet), and Denny Weston Jr. (drums).
