How to celebrate your 100th release? The always reliable Portuguese label Chaputa! Records hits the milestone in style, with an awesome garage rock compilation entitled Still Primitive. It’s a loving, fuzz-drenched salute to The Best of Pebbles Vol. 1: Get Primitive, 40 years after this must-have collection came out. A great idea, executed with passion. Reimagining the tracklist (and cover art) that first lit the fire for so many fellow garage obsessives, this 16-band international line-up tackles Greg Shaw’s sacred songbook with grit, reverence, and just enough reckless abandon. Regular visitors to our blog (and other fans of the genre) will find quite a few familiar faces; their new versions sound as timeless and urgent as ever, a remarkable achievement. Still primitive? That’s a badge of honor!
Still Primitive is out now digitally and on vinyl LP through Chaputa! Records. Featuring covers of Five Years Ahead Of My Time (The Third Bardo) by The Loons, I Ain’t No Miracle Worker (Jimmy & The Offbeats) by Crater Snakes, Good Times (Nobody’s Children) by The Statics, No Friend Of Mine (The Sparkles) by The Rebel Set, Be A Cave Man (The Avengers) by Femur, Hey Little Bird (The Barbarians) by Fadeaways, Going All The Way (The Squires) by The Smoggers, You’re Gonna Miss Me (The Spades) by The Knight Shades, Action Woman (The Electras) by The Mourning After, I’m A Living Sickness (The Calico Wall) by Plastic Section, Green Fuzz (Randy Alvey & Green Fuzz) by The Sences, Voices Green And Purple (The Bees) by Thee Montgomery Wards, 1-2-5 (The Haunted) by The Maharajas, Blackout Of Gretely (Gonn) by The Thingz, Born Loser (Murphy & The Mob) by The Satelliters, and Primitive (The Groupies) by Wyld Gooms. The original Rudi Protrudi artwork has been successfully updated by Rui Ricardo.
Limited to just 500 vinyl copies, this is the kind of release that feels like an event with the risk of missing out if you don’t act quickly. Considering the subtitle—Volume One: The Legacy!—we might even dream of a sequel.
