Severe Girls are not really severe girls, but a new slacker rock band from the UK, led by singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Andrew Richardson—formerly a drummer for Thurston Moore, Aldous RH, Francis Lung, and others—alongside Jon Hughes (guitar), Chris Clayden (bass), and Mike Duckworth (drums). The Another Night EP is the band’s first collection, a short, sharp showcase of melodic disorientation, wrapping emotional turbulence in pure guitar-driven bliss.
The six songs here combine jangly warmth, lo-fi stubbornness, and scrappy charm with British indie sensibility. It’s unpretentious punk ‘n’ roll in a shell of power pop, with fuzzed hooks and heart-on-sleeve confusion. Standout track Not The One illustrates this best: “Here comes anxiety, paranoia, and a low self-esteem, coming after me”—it feels strangely uplifting, and freshly wired for right now.
Another Night, recorded and engineered by Jamie Birkett, is out now digitally via Beyond Below Records. All music written and performed by Andrew Neil Richardson.
