About twenty months after their wonderful self-titled debut, Brussels five-piece capsuna return with their second album — and it’s a stunner. Can’t versus can’t sounds like the kind of record you’d expect to find on Merge or Matador: intricate, subtle, and layered indie pop that unfolds slowly but completely. Louise Crosby’s voice remains the heart of it all, equal parts tender, detached, and quietly magnetic.
It’s baffling that capsuna have managed to stay under the radar this long, almost like they’re running anti-detection software. But that stealth mode is about to expire — this record is too good to stay hidden. Start with the shimmering opener Headstand or the jangly melancholy of Shake Hands, and you’ll find yourself diving deeper, discovering new details with every listen.
