Californian’s Family Obligation returns with their sophomore full-length, Prior Commitments, a record that’s as polished as it is punchy. Across thirteen catchy songs, Christie Dierk (vocals), Kevin Ryan (guitar, vocals), Kyle Lester (bass), and Micah Turney (drums) serve up a mix of pop-punk energy, power-pop hooks, and garage grit, balancing heartfelt angst with sly humor.
Lyrically, the album thrives on tension: relationships that wobble or vanish (Ghost Situation), friendships tested by time (Friends Again), and the enduring ache of nostalgia (Laundry Chute, Misnomer). Elsewhere, tracks like Prior Commitments, Panic Adjacent, and Existential and Sad confront anxiety, guilt, and the universal struggle to feel okay in a world that’s anything but. Even when the subject matter is heavy, the band leans into self-deprecating wit, whether it’s calling out a co-worker (86’d) or simmering over creative jealousy (The Equation).
Musically, the record moves with a restless, driving energy that mirrors the relatable wordplay—shimmering guitar riffs, a tight rhythm section, and lively vocals. Enjoyable on many levels.
Prior Commitments—recorded, mixed, and mastered by Ryan Perras—is out now digitally via Sick Note. Also featuring Bobby Dierk (trombone), Gabe Horn (lap steel guitar), Brian Lockrem (trumpet), and Dan Root (saxophone).
