The Cords have got me all goosebumps and a fluttering heart with their debut full-length. I guess that happens when you nail the absolute sweet spot of a perfect debut. Sisters Eva and Grace Tedeschi take the barest setup—guitar, drums, voices—and make it sound like a revelation.
Sure, the record is all sweetness on the surface: crystalline vocals, guitar riffs that buzz and sparkle, hooks that sound like old favorites the second they arrive. But underneath is pure pulse—a punk heartbeat, a reckless urgency that keeps it miles away from prefab pop. That restless energy, almost like The Cords can’t wait to get to the next song they want you to hear, makes every track feel like it could fall apart at any second, only to land perfectly in the pocket.
And maybe that’s why this debut feels so vital. The Cords may nod toward The Shop Assistants, Talulah Gosh, or The Primitives, but it does not feel like a nostalgic record. The Cords LP feels present, urgent, and necessary. It’s the sound of two sisters pushing each other higher, making something immediate, personal, and alive that could be the fuel to ignite a new wave of indie pop bands. No wonder Skep Wax and Slumberland jumped on board: these are labels that only back the real deal. And The Cords, with this debut, sound an awful lot like that!
