In the rock ‘n’ roll arena, the 7″ is a popular format, so it makes sense that British rhythm and beat trio The Masonics split their eight new songs across two 45s instead of having them pressed onto one LP. Both Nothin’ Shakin’ But… and Some Other Guys feature four covers, choice cuts that reach beyond the big hits and show a great love for the rich history of music—as you might expect from Mickey Hampshire (vocals, guitar), John Gibbs (bass, vocals), and Bruce Brand (drums, percussion, vocals), musicians we know from big names like The Milkshakes, The Pop Rivets, Thee Headcoats, and The Kaisers.
On the former release you can hear exciting takes of Blue Beat (The Beazers, 1964), My Baby Left Me (Arthur Crudup, 1950), The Ferris Wheel (The Everly Brothers, 1964), and Nothin’ Shakin’ (But The Leaves On The Trees) (Eddie Fontaine, 1958), on the latter Some Other Guy (Richie Barrett, 1962), See That My Grave Is Kept Clean (Blind Lemon Jefferson, 1927), Bertha Lou (Dorsey Burnette, 1957), and Killing Floor (Howlin’ Wolf, 1964). Each and every one is raw and groovy, ready to rock a longing dance floor.
Nothin’ Shakin’ But… and Some Other Guys—recorded and mastered by Jim Riley—are out now digitally and on vinyl 7″ through Spinout Nuggets.
