Sometimes a band hits like a lightning bolt—unpredictable, emotional, and impossible to ignore. That’s what happened when Rough Trade got their hands on a mysterious demo from an unknown LA six-piece. What followed was a fast track from bedroom recordings to label signing, with this debut single as a foretaste of a career ahead.
We’re talking about The Sophs, featuring Ethan Ramon (vocals), Sam Yuh (keyboards), Austin Parker Jones (electric guitar), Seth Smades (acoustic guitar), Cole Bobbitt (bass), and Devin Russ (drums). In an inimitable way they link the electronic pop sensibilities of acts like The Whitest Boy Alive to the grit of bands like The Strokes, with earworm melodies and killer harmonies as icing on the cake.
Sweat, the first glimpse we get of their sound, is genre-agnostic, emotionally raw, vulnerable, and thrilling—a volatile mix of synths and guitar textures, carried by lyrics that lean on discomfort, grief, and breakdowns of control. It’s not about being pretty, it’s about being real. This is the kind of band that doesn’t wait to be discovered—they will detonate.
Sweat b/w At Your Worst (You Tried Your Best) is out on June 20th, digitally and on 7″ vinyl, through Rough Trade Records.
