Last December marked the unexpected return of Vancouver shoegazers Movieland with Then & Now, a 90s rarities collection as the first installment of the 604 Decades archival series. The band’s frontman Alan D. Boyd sensed an opportunity and offered to record some new music for a follow-up release—no sooner said than done—which led to the Now & Then album, a selection of eight songs written sometime over the past thirty years.
The record kicks off with a road trip about chasing freedom—”Come on lets go, lets get away”—and that light-hearted feeling is maintained in what follows. Exploration and emotion meet spontaneity and vibrancy. Die-hard shoegaze fans will see light above the dark dance floor: “Seems like such a long long time ago // We were living like no one would know // Times are surely getting better now” (from Waiting for the Savior).
Now & Then is out now digitally via 604 Records. Featuring Alan D. Boyd, with Rex Roulette (Eagles of Death Metal), Freddie Cowan (The Vaccines), Ev Laroi (Idyl Tea), Tom Murray (Old Reliable), and past bandmates John Ounpuu on bass and Clancy Denehy on bass.
