Sweet love letters set to sharp guitar licks, it’s a golden formula that Melbourne-based power pop quartet Hexham Heads masters to perfection. They may be a new name at the scene, but the members—Van Walker (vocals, guitar), Michael Hubbard (guitar, vocals), George Carroll Wilson (bass, vocals) and Brett Wolfenden (drums)—are seasoned musicians from other cool bands. Their self-titled debut EP delivers four hits with straightforward lyrics (“Just say you love me // And I’ll make you happy // Woah”—from Say It Again), backed by vocals that are somewhat reminiscent of Elvis Costello, energetic Thin Lizzy-esque riffs, and a rock-solid rhythm section, but above all, irresistible hooks and infectious harmonies. Timeless and exhilarating, this 10-minute introduction leaves us eagerly anticipating the full-length album set to drop later this year.
The self-titled Hexham Heads EP, recorded and mixed by Michael Hubbard, is out now digitally and on 7″ vinyl through Cheersquad Records & Tapes.
