Listening to Heavy Möther II’s new self-titled album feels like dropping the needle on one of those ‘60s U.S. punk compilations. The band sounds greasy, unhinged, wildly creative, and blissfully indifferent to genre expectations. As a result, the ten tracks fly off in all directions—not unlike Retail Simps, whose Joe Chamandy plays guitar and drums on this record. And that’s on top of a lineup featuring members of The Gizmos, Rocket From The Tombs, The Cowboys, and Heavy Mother. Talk about star power.
The album includes covers of Randy Newman’s Burn Down The Cornfield and The Troggs’ Night Of The Long Grass, but their version of Velvet Underground’s Foggy Notion might be the best of the bunch. That said, my absolute favorite is Omnivore—a ridiculously catchy piece of outsider rock ’n’ roll. I’d buy the LP just to own that track alone.
Heavy Möther II is out now on Total Punk Records.
