I’m not sure what’s more impressive about Jake Robertson (of Ausmuteants, Hierophants, Leather Towel, and SWAB fame) and his solo project Alien Nosejob: his mind-boggling productivity — Turns the Colour of Bad Shit is his sixth Alien Nosejob record since 2020, and his seventh overall — or his ability to make each release a wildly different experience. Let’s recap the last three: Paint It Clear (2021) was a synth-driven post-punk delight, Stained Glass (2022) felt like AC/DC on speed, and The Derivative Sounds of…Or… A Dog Always Returns to its Vomit (2023) saw Robertson dive headfirst into garage/psych territory.
Now, with Turns the Colour of Bad Shit, Robertson drops a brilliant classic ’70s punk album. It kicks off with the slow-burning Bird Strike, before ramping up the tempo with Trapped In Time, a track that channels the bratty energy of X-Ray Spex. From there, the record morphs into a relentless proto-punk hit fest, oozing with snotty attitude and raw energy.
You have to wonder: does Robertson ever take a step back to admire the eclectic discography he’s building with Alien Nosejob? He should — because outside of the genre-hopping brilliance of Daniel Romano, I can’t think of another artist who’s this much of a chameleon, and this damn good at it.
Turns the Colour of Bad Shit is out today via the record budget Bermuda triangle of Anti Fade, Total Punk, and Drunken Sailor Records.
