While listening to Unsubscribe From The Underground, the latest EP from Hayley and the Crushers, I can’t help but wonder: where, oh where, is the ceiling for this Detroit-by-way-of-California duo? It’s like every year they reach a new high. And with these five fresh tracks, Hayley and the Crushers have dropped songs so catchy they would have made Holly & The Italians and The Go-Go’s blush, warning them to step up their game if they want to keep up.
There’s plenty of sugar and bubblegum on Unsubscribe From The Underground, but it’s served with a punk edge by two musicians who clearly love the genre (Don’t miss our Gimme 5 feature with Hayley, where she shares five classic tracks that influenced the songwriting on the new EP). Hayley and the Crushers have found that perfect sweet spot between punk and pop, and they’re thriving in it. Their carefree attitude makes them all the cooler for it, and their confidence shines through. Take their cover of Juice Newton’s Angel of the Morning for example — who knew turning the song into a sleaze-punk anthem could work so well?
