Cleveland-raised/Chicago-based singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Matt McLean doesn’t mince his words. It’s his vocals, guitars and keys that you hear on his Daytripping Ruined My Life LP, with Michael Green on drums and bass. If we had to categorize it, we would probably opt for the lo-fi slacker rock label, a badge of honor. The ten songs here are direct, streetwise and witty, somehow also relatable and engaging. Musically primitive but effective. And pretty cool actually. For me the track Sweet Nothing, Bummer Everything stands out, an anthem that can compete with Beck’s Loser.
