Whenever “The Earth’s Premier International Dirt Pop Label” Bloated Kat puts out new music, I’m all ears. Their latest find, Hedge, doesn’t disappoint with their debut LP Better Days which is essential listening for fans of highly melodic and heartfelt punk rock. The band describes themselves as “pop punk for people who call Hüsker Dü and Superchunk pop punk,” and I’d add Samiam to that list of comparables. The trio (members of Young Leaves and Sneeze) also cites Superdrag, Dinosaur Jr., Bob Mould, Weston and Green Day’s Kerplunk! as influences. Getting excited yet? I know I was and I became even more hyped once I pressed play.
Hedge’s sound is driven by loud, distorted guitars and an energetic, punchy rhythm section. However, it’s the vocal melodies that truly define their identity. Expect aggressive instrumentation paired with pop sensibilities – a blend of pop punk that leans towards alt pop, alt rock, and emo. Whatever label you choose, one thing is certain: Hedge is an exciting new band that demands attention.
Pre-order the 12″at Bloated Kat or Midnight Werewolf. The album is streaming in full at Dying Scene, and will be out later this week (August 22).
