When a band’s name is written in all caps, it’s often unclear whether it’s intentional or if they expect others to follow suit. With IRKED (from Tyne And Wear, England), there’s no doubt – their name demands to be shouted.
IRKED is a a wrecking crew disguised as a punk band. Their debut, simply titled EP, is loud, blunt, and ferocious. This comes as no surprise given their cited influences: G.L.O.S.S, Downtown Boys, Uranium Club, and Pissed Jeans. IRKED don’t always rely on speed to excite, though up-tempo tracks like Backstreets and Crippling Empath are undeniable highlights. The talkscreaming Move is another standout. Every track is a different flavor of chaos, served up with a side of old-school punk snarl. Getting run over by a freight train usually doesn’t feel this good.
EP is out now (and apparently sold out already) on 12″ on on the brilliantly named Wrong Speed Records.
