There were six long years between albums one and two for Oh Boland, despite the latter being recorded shortly after the first. When album two finally came out, the Irish band assured us we wouldn’t have to wait long for its follow-up. Based on past experience, I penciled that one in for 2028. But I’m glad I didn’t put any money on it — album three is already here. It’s called Western Leisure and it’s out today on Meritorio and Safe Suburban Home Records.
The new LP is a significant sidestep from the previous Oh Boland albums. It’s essentially a solo effort by frontman Niall Murphy, who used the time and space to explore broader sounds. Does this mean the garagey power-pop days of Oh Boland are long gone? Well, not entirely. Western Leisure is more about widening the river Oh Boland is sailing than turning the ship around. The band still sounds scrappy, infectious, and anthemic. Like its predecessors, Western Leisure is another dynamic, lively record that feels spontaneous and loose. It plainly rocks, with several songs featuring those trademark gang vocals that will have you joining in even if you don’t know the lyrics. Just don’t expect the raucous garage power pop of before; instead, you’ll find indie rock with hints of garage, pop, and Americana.
Western Leisure won’t shake you to your core, but it will give you a warm glow and put a smile on your face. I can’t wait for this to arrive at my doorstep and to see the band at Left Of The Dial Fest this Autumn!
