Jane Woe is the Houston, Texas-based post-country/boot-gaze outfit featuring songwriter Erin Dance (vocals, guitar, lyrics), Scott Ayers (pedal steel, acoustic guitar, baritone guitar, banjo, keyboards), Carol Sandin Cooley (bass, backing vocals) and Kirk Suddreath (drums). Their diverse self-titled debut studio album deviates quite a bit from what usually comes from the country world, thanks to idiosyncratic ideas and the application of psych and indie pop elements. The ten songs here are atmospheric and cinematic in music, alliterative and effective in lyrics (“The roosters call, cocka doodle doo” in Cuckhold’s Ball, “Why don’t you dip me do si do” in Hard Headed Woman, “and that train whistles, hoooooo hooooo hoooooo hoooo” in Train Song – that kind of work) – this record surprises and amazes in an inimitable way.
