Here is a debut EP that is right on the money in terms of quality powerpop rock’n’roll. Perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised given the personnel assembled: SLIP~ons is comprised of Brock Pytel (The Doughboys), Brian Minato (Sarah McLachlan), Rob “Shockk” Matharu (The Spitfires), and Shane Wilson. The veteran presence shines through on the five songs on the EP. I am particularly impressed by Soldier, Don’t Say Goodbye, a song that reveals the best qualities of SLIP~ons: huge guitars, arena sized chorus and a sound heavily influenced by a love for ’80s underground rock and punk music. The production is pretty flawless as well, given that SLIP~ons sound polished and powerful, and these songs almost have a live feel to them.
Crazy to think that this band started a decade ago and we had to wait so long to release their debut EP. I guess sometimes life and all of its inevitable setbacks can get in the way, but it is life-affirming to ultimately see a positive outcome for a good idea.
