Gary Owens is a new pseudonym for the artist Graves who is actually Greg Olin. While that may raise some confusion, the album cover is rather explicit about what to expect from this Gary Owens project. Country? Yes! The songs on I Have Some Thoughts are laid back and easy to digest. But it is country through the eyes and ears of indie musicians: Olin gathered members of Sonny and the Sunsets, Ty Segall, Dandy Warhols and Guantanamo Baywatch to help him out on the recordings, including .
I Have Some Thoughts reminds me of Sonny and the Sunsets’ country record (Longtime Companion) and David Berman’s Purple Mountains – two records with memorable lyrics and infinite replayability. Time will tell if that also applies to this Gary Owens, but I’m liking it quite a bit already!
I Have Some Thoughts is out now through Perpetual Doom and Curly Cassettes.
