If you are a fan of independent music, there is a good chance Glenn Donaldson makes an appearance in your record collection. The songwriter out of San Francisco currently has accumulated 215 credits on Discogs, which may sound dystopian but is in fact very impressive and exemplary of a durable career that started well over two decades ago. Acts Donaldson has been involved in? Woods, Skygreen Leopards, The Telephone Numbers to name a few. Lately, Donaldson has been particularly active under the moniker The Reds, Pinks & Purples. His latest release, his eight (!) full length in four years, is The Town That Cursed Your Name, a title that reads like a six-word story. Donaldson is pretty good at those. Take a quick look at the track list, listen to the words and note Donaldson’s talent for evoking images. Combine that with his songwriting skills and you’ve got a golden combo of melancholic and thoughtful underground pop music with memorable lyrics (the opening lines of the title track: “It’s a shame your record label failed // Too many problems with the mail”) and the kind of strummy, fuzzy, jangly guitar work we at Add To Wantlist will never tire of.
Of the many many The Reds, Pinks & Purples releases, this one’s my favorite one yet! Buy The Town That Cursed Your Name on CD or LP through Tough Love and Slumberland Records.
