New EP: Dead Chic || The Venus Ballroom

Last summer we were introduced to French eclectic rock four-piece Dead Chic, and how: the raw and dark songs of their Bastion Session made such an impression that they easily made it to my year-end list. Andy Balcon (awesome gritty lead vocals, guitar), Damien Félix (reverb-heavy guitars, backing vocals), Mathis Akengin (keyboards, backing vocals) and Rémi Ferbus (drums, percussion, backing vocals) now return with six-track EP The Venus Ballroom. Where their previous release was subdued and intimate, they now show that their “heavy soul” also has a theatrical and exuberant side, thanks in part to an additional brass section, the use of electronics, and influences from different (hard to pin down) genres. The Belly Of The Jungle stimulates my senses a bit too much (I can imagine it works very well live, though), in the other songs the band finds the right balance between musical cleverness and surprising frivolity. Pretty intriguing what these musicians bring to the earphones here.

The Venus Ballroom is out now digitally, on CD and vinyl 12″ through Upton Park.
