New album: Purling Hiss || Drag On Girard

In a musical landscape where an unfathomable amount of musical bytes is being added to the listening pile each week, it is refreshing to have a 6-year period between albums. Case in point: Purling Hiss’ new LP Drag On Girard which follows High Bias (2016). High Bias was the final part of a strong trilogy of records by the band in the mid tens. I am particularly fond of Water On Mars (2013) and Weirdon (2014). I recall seeing Puring Hiss around that time and being blown away by how great a live band they are. I’m drifting off though. What I am trying to say is that, and this applies to that excellent new Connections LP that is out now as well, a long pause between records can have a powerful effect. It builds up anticipation and helps to make reacquainting with the band a most welcoming and refreshing experience.

What helps to up the excitement is that Mike Polizze and his buddies in Purling Hiss absolutely shred on Drag On Girard. On their best moments, Purling Hiss take a foundation build upon ’80s J. Mascis, and ’70s classic rock into exciting directions. In these moments, they are loud, rockin’ and dreamy – fever dreamish that is. Drag On Girard is full of these moments. Just listen to the first three tracks if you need convincing. Purling Hiss make a glorious return with Drag On Girard. It is out now through Drag City.
