Neither cold expectations nor static reactions are appropriate here. Steve Prygoda (guitars, vocals, keys, percussion), JoEllen Saunders Yannis (bass, vocals) and Mike Demers (drums) together make up the Boston-based band Cold Expectations. They describe their music as dark jangle pop, but their full-length album Static Reactions is much more (and lighter) than that. You’ll hear ten melodic songs that shift back and forth between twee pop and power pop, with a few indie rock and new waves outbursts. Standout track Trench Coats could have been a hit by The Undertones and Take The Skinheads Bowling is a successful Camper Van Beethoven cover, but actually the entire LP is 37 minutes of warm and moving enjoyment, with vocal harmonies just as beautiful as the poetic lyrics.
