If you are looking to start your week with something soul soothing that doesn’t dull but rather activates your senses, listen to Practice, the debut album by Free Range. Free Range is Sofia Jensen, who is barely 18 years old but whose folky americana indie pop signals many lives lived. Jensen’s distinct voice which is warm and earnest in its delivery and a perfect companion to the subtle instrumentation on Practice.
There is something about Free Range that just clicks with me. Perhaps it’s the purity and lack of pretension, or the consistent quality of the songs – and the video’s. Perhaps it’s the intimacy of the late night recording sessions during the darkest days of Covid-19 seeping through. Whatever it is, Practice is making me feel all kinds of things. Let’s not overanalyse it though. Why try to rationalize the magical power of this record?
